Sidewalk Catwalk

New York City is a center of fashion both in the creation and the adoption. Top fashion designers live and have showrooms or flagship stores in NYC, which have been cropping up in the Meatpacking District and adding to the upscale flavor of that area. Up and comers study the subject at the Parsons the New School for Design or Fashion Institute of Technology. The West Village and Soho are havens for designers trying to make a name for themselves and all the small shops are a shopper’s paradise for those looking for something special and not off the rack. Every September, the city dresses up with Fashion Week where many designers show off their collections.

Fashion is a personal statement and no matter where you stand in the spectrum — T-shirt or tux, sweat pants or strapless — fashion is something you live with and live in. In NYC, with the numerous chain and thrift stores, the ability to express by dress is limited more by the time needed for shopping and the creative eye than by cost. Ethnic stores selling traditional dress is another outlet for layers of expressiveness.

Personality is not just how an outfit is put together. Fashion designers have very distinct styles and points of view that are evident in every stitch of their creations. This year from June 24 to September 3, a public fashion art exhibit — Sidewalk Catwalk — will be on display on Broadway in NYC’s Fashion District from 35th to 42nd Streets. Check out the slide show and see if you can match the designers to the mannequins.
