It’s not just mermaids at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. It’s a sea-related theme so anything goes in terms of costumes and floats. For expats who live near the coast, summer means sun, sand, and surf and nothing exemplifies this more than the Coney Island Mermaid Parade in Brooklyn, NY. A Saturday event that happens around the Summer Solstice — this year the Mermaid Parade was on June 19th. The Mermaid Parade started in 1983 as an arts parade that celebrates all things sea-related. For a fee, anyone can march in the parade — and many do, showing off homemade costumes and floats.

Scenes of Ellis Island

After years of restoration work, Ellis Island reopened to the public in 1990. The main building where immigrants-to-be were processed and interviewed is now an immigration museum. Restoration continues and is needed in other buildings and the grounds. Save Ellis Island is an organization that raises awareness and funds for the restoration and preservation of this important chapter of American history.
